Providing sponsored newspapers and curriculum guides to schools.

Sponsorship

The Kalamazoo Gazette's Newspaper In Education program is made possible through the support of our generous sponsors. While the Gazette supplies free curriculum guides and supplementary teaching materials, the discounted-rate newspapers are paid for by donations from local businesses and organizations who "adopt" classrooms and subscribers who donate the value of their missed newspapers while they are away from home.

Why become an "Adopt-A-Classroom" sponsor?

"Adopt-A-Classroom" sponsorships directly support literacy and civic education in southwestern Michigan. Students who read at a young age are more likely to make a habit of it for the rest of their lives. National research has shown that regularly reading newspapers in class dramatically raises students reading and comprehension levels.*

Corporate sponsors receive cards, letters and artwork of appreciation from students in the classroom(s) they sponsor. A poster bearing the sponsor's name and logo is displayed in each adopted classroom. Additionally, sponsors are recognized in colorful, in-paper ads at least twice annually. Sponsors also are thanked in supplementary materials provided to NIE classrooms.

For more information on becoming an "Adopt-A-Classroom" sponsor, please e-mail Ann Marie at nie@kalamazoogazette.com.

* Students who regularly read newspapers in class, scored an average of 10 to 29 percent higher on standardized tests than their peers who did not read newspapers. (Measuring Success, NAA Foundation, 2001.)

Subscribers may help too.

As a Kalamazoo Gazette subscriber, you have the opportunity to support literacy and civic education locally. When you are away from home and have your newspaper delivery temporarily stopped, you may donate the value of your missed papers to NIE. The cost of one regularly priced newspaper provides three discounted-rate newspapers to area schools. Donations are collected all year long and are used to purchase discounted newspapers during the school year and during summer school programs.

Please call 269-388-7789 or click here to donate while you are on vacation.
