In addition to our Black History Month program, there is something in the Kalamazoo Gazette every day for students of all ages and learning levels. Order newspaper delivery on the day (or days) that works best for your class. Specialized classroom content for the 2007-2008 school year includes:
Monday
Every Monday the Gazette publishes a chapter and illustration of a longer story. Stories include a free teacher guide full of coordinating lessons and a reading scrapbook for each student to collect chapters. Stories are appropriate for elementary and some middle school grades.
| In our current story, author Mary Maden's characters have returned to get to the bottom of another mystery. This suspenseful tale is not a sequel, however, and readers meeting Toby and Ali for the first time will enjoy this spine-tingling adventure as much as those who read the wildly popular Mystery of Latham House. Ghost From the Past: The Mystery of the Phantom Dog, began on January 7 and is published every Monday in the Today section of the Gazette through May 12.* |
*Please note: There will not be a chapter published on Monday, April 7, to accommodate spring break for most schools. The story will resume on Monday, April 14.
Tuesday
Teen Newsbreak, a current events column, features a topic of interest to teens and checks their knowledge of the news with a weekly quiz. Tuesday's edition also includes HealthLife, which features stories on specific health topics. HealthLife is a great resource for middle and high school health and science students.
Wednesday
NIE periodically publishes special-topic series in the Gazette on Wednesdays, including the popular Black History Month series in February (see above.)
Thursday
The Mini Page is a complete mini-newspaper inserted in the Gazette. Our most popular elementary-level feature, it cultivates a love of reading in young students and helps them develop a regular reading habit. Also in Thursday's Gazette is Ticket, a weekend entertainment guide for teens and adults.
