SNAP [Specifications for Newsprint Advertising Production]

The Kalamazoo Gazette follows the high standards set by SNAP.
SNAP provides guidelines for the cold process press (web printing); which are intended to be used by advertisers, agencies, publishers, pre-press and printers. Images that do meet the SNAP standards will provide a clean, crisp printed image.

IMAGE SPECIFICATIONS

All scans should be sized in Photoshop as close to the final output size as possible. Enlargement or reduction of more than 25 percent in page layout software will result in loss of sharpness and image quality. Resolution should be at least 200 dpi for halftones and 300 dpi for bitmap images. Color scans must be saved using the CMYK mode. Any shadow in excess of 88% can be expected to print solid black. Line screen should be 100 lpi. Plan for a dot gain of 30% and a total ink limit of 240%.

IMAGE QUALITY CONCERNS

The best reproduction begins with good-quality original materials. Good-quality digital photos will render good reproduction. Preferable image resolution is 200 dpi for newsprint, 300 dpi for commercial media. Web quality (72 dpi) photos, graphics and printed halftone materials (magazines and newspapers) produce marginal results.

TYPOGRAPHY + RULES

Type set smaller than 6 point should be avoided
Use 10-point type minimum to reverse out of a single color background. Use 12-point type minimum to reverse out of a four-color background. Do not reverse serif type smaller than 12 points.
Do not reverse serif type within screened areas containing less than a 70% screen of 2, 3 or 4 colors Do not reverse serif type in yellow or other light-colored background. All fonts used must be provided (this does not include files sent in PDF format if fonts have been properly embedded.) Do not reverse small type over colored images. Reverse copy should be set in bold-face type for best reproduction.

SCREENED TEXT/FONTS

Please avoid screen serif type with fine or medium weight type. Type screened at 80% or more will reproduce as a solid.

UPLOADING FILES TO THE FTP SITE

Our preferred method of digital media transmission is our File Transfer Protocol (FTP) site. Your direct connection to our server means your files will be transferred completely and dependably. Use your Internet browser to upload your files. If your PDFs are quite large, you can use a utility to compress your files prior to uploading. OS X Macs have built in zip archive functions within the operating system. WinZip software works well on Windows PCs. Once your files have been uploaded, you may verify receipt through your sales representative.
